As part of our faith-based mission to enrich the lives of homebound seniors, KSC offers affordable, dependable, friendly, and safe transportation for our KSC In-Home Care senior friends.  There will be a time for each of us when the risks of driving outweigh the benefits.  Safety for our seniors and for others on the road is a serious matter.  As a

community we must offer high-risk seniors transportation options that make being chauffeured a more appealing and preferred alternative while keeping them connected to our community.  At KSC we believe it’s the journey, not just the destination that matters.  For KSC’s senior passengers, it means going the extra mile by:

• offering to take notes in their medical appointment
• giving them a bottled water to help keep them hydrated
• texting their family member to let them know they have safely arrived at their destination and/or back home
• surprising them with a flower or a Blessing Gift
• calling them on their birthday
• praying for them and the situations they share

The car conversations and the friendships formed are special.  Our senior passengers receive supportive door-through-door service and are treated with honor and respect.

The drivers are blessed knowing they have made a difference in someone’s life with simple acts of kindness in Jesus’ name.

Currently we are limited to our KSC In-Home Care seniors.  Occasionally we transport additional west side homebound seniors to appointments. This depends on if volunteer drivers are available.  Donations to the ministry are accepted for transportation appreciation.  For more information or to become a volunteer driver, contact KSC at 316-209-9028.

NOTE: We are looking to add a wheelchair accessible van to accommodate those seniors who are not ambulatory.  When funds are collected to purchase this specialized van, we will update this information!

Things to Keep in Mind

 Should I Be Driving Others?

If you can answer “yes” to the following, then driving others can be a true blessing!

•  Do family and friends say your driving is safe and are willing to ride with you?
• Do you have a valid driver’s license for the state in which you reside? r Do you have current car tags?
• Do you have adequate car insurance?
• Do I keep my vehicle properly maintained and in good working order?
• Are you free of accidents, fender benders, and ticket violations in the past 2 years?
• Are you free of medication that might impair your ability to drive?
• Are you free of vision problems or other medical conditions that interfere with responsible driving?

Should I drive my car or the senior’s car?

• It is safer for you to drive your car because you are familiar with it, know that it has been maintained, and know that you have insurance on it.
• Knowing if the senior’s car has been maintained (or if it sits in the garage for months at a time) and knowing if their tags and insurance are updated can take some homework.
• Check state law, but in Kansas, your personal insurance follows the car, not the driver.

So if you are in accident in your car, you and the senior will be insured.  You don’t you know if the senior’s car has insurance.  If you are in an accident driving the senior’s car, you are dependent on the senior’s insurance, which could be an unknown.

Should I wear a chauffer’s hat? 

Probably not necessary, but here are some tips that will make your journey safe and successful.

•  Keep vehicle free of clutter and unpleasant odors (Put a fabric softener sheet under the seat) r Light conversation is encouraged over the choice of the radio.
• Make sure everyone is wearing their seatbelt.
• Talking or texting on the phone should wait until the vehicle is stopped and parked. r Drive cautiously and at speeds appropriate for traffic, weather, and road conditions.
• Offer passenger a bottle of water to stay hydrated.
• Ask them if they would like to stop at the restroom before heading home.
• Ask if there is another stop they need to make on the way home (groceries, bank…)
